Lower fertility in men linked to obesity

July 10th 2008

Research from the University of Aberdeen has shown that obese men produce substantially less sperm than average and have higher levels of abnormalities, which can reduce chances of conceiving and increase risk of miscarriage.

The researchers examined patient records for 5,316 men attending Aberdeen Fertility Centre between 1990 and 2007. The study also found that severely underweight men, with BMIs less than 19 had poorer sperm quality than men in the healthy weight range.
