Children aged 10 to be screened for cholesterol

Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence approved yesterday will see all adults with a cholesterol score of above 7.5 asked about heart disease and heart attacks in their family and, where necessary, referred for genetic testing for the condition familial hyper cholesterolaemia.If they are found to have the defects that cause the disorder their immediate family,including children, should also be tested.The condition is treated with statins and in some cases children at risk could also be prescribed the drugs.
