How the elderly should stay in shape
September 12th 2008
A study of 80 pensioners by Manchester Metropolitan University has concluded that a sugary drink, then gentle exercise followed by a protein-rich meal helps the over-65s lose weight, build muscle and improve flexibility.
Researchers said that while strenuous exercise helps the young build muscle, the opposite appears to be true in old age due to changes in hormone levels and the immune system but gentle exercise still builds muscle and the process is helped by having a protein drink or protein-rich meal.
Dr Gladys Pearson from Manchester Metropolitan University said it was ‘never too late’ to start exercising, due to the known link between physical activity, nutrition and improved mood.
