Pupils and teachersprotest afterBeijingimposes daily winter jog
November 26th 2008
The ministry of education in China has launched a winter running campaign, which it hopes will boost both patriotism and health. Schools have been ordered to take their pupils for a jog until the end of April. Primary school pupils must run 1km, junior high school students 1.5km and senior high and college students 2km. The scheme has proved controversial with parents and teachers as well as children complaining. One commentator, however, said the only fault with the campaign was that it did not go far enough. He argued that the physical condition of youth in China was dropping fast and further running was necessary.
