Third of adults will be obese in four years
December 13th 2008
Unfortunately not all news is good with regard to2012. Scientists led by a team from University College, London have said that one third of adults will be obese within four years. Almost one in four adults is now classed as obese. Current trends suggest this will rise to 13 million adults in England (1 in 3) being classed as obese by 2012.Almost half of these will be from low-income or disadvantaged areas.
Dr Paola Zaninotto, from the department of epidemiology and public health at UCL, said obesity is a “major public health problem which can lead to premature death because of its association with serious conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer."
She added: “There is an urgent need to reverse this trend towards obesity and there are not signs, as yet, that it is reversing.”
The height, weight and body mass index of 128,000 adults were examined for this study which is published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
