The pot belly in a glass of fruit juice
July 7th 2008
A number of papers report on research from the University of California which found fructose (fruit sugar) more likely than other types of sugar to cause fat around the abdomen.
Fructose is found in fruit, fruit juice and jams but is also used to sweeten soft drinks and junk food. It is thought that a cake made with fructose may be more harmful than one made with glucose.
Dr Peter Havel, who led the study, said more research was needed to establish the exact link between fructose and obesity. The study is published in the New Scientist.
